ATLANTA, November 11, 2024 - The Educated Choices Program (ECP) responds to the rise of Zoonotic diseases, or those passed from animals to humans, and the number of animals being raised for food with a new release: “From Farm to Flu: Public Health and Pandemic Prevention.” In this new education package students and community members will find evidence-backed answers to the question: How can our food choices help prevent or contribute to the next pandemic?
Viewers will examine common zoonotic diseases and their connection to animal agriculture, including Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), Swine influenza, and Avian influenza. Historically significant pandemics caused by zoonotic diseases will also be investigated, including the Spanish flu, rabies, Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), and ebola. Audience members will walk away with a thorough understanding of transmission methods and prevention measures, the impacts of zoonotic diseases on workers and public health, and positive choices we can make to reduce our reliance on disease-causing agricultural practices.
Guided notes, lesson plans, homework, discussion prompts, and activities are available on ECP’s Video Library, inviting viewers to further their understanding of this important topic and consider how they can implement what they learn into their everyday lives.
