The ECP team has been busy this fall, sharing our free video library as we visit cities across the US to show educators what we have to offer. Most recently, ECP visited Eugene, Oregon, for the 62nd Annual Conference on Science Education hosted by the Oregon Science Teachers Association (OSTA). Our environment-related resources were highlighted, including:
Explore the role food production plays in climate change and sustainable alternatives in partnership with the Environmental Working Group.
Meet the Attendees
ECP’s Web Development Manager, Debbie Cravey, and Engagement Manager, Amber Snyder, served as representatives, getting an opportunity to speak with attendees who were science professionals familiar with the role of our current food systems in environmental sustainability and climate change. As our team talked with science educators from around the state, it became clear that they were thrilled to learn more about our food education solutions and eager to use our free resources in their classrooms.
Positive Feedback: ECP’s Unbiased, Evidence-Based Approach
One educator explained that she was currently utilizing food education in her classroom from an organization that received corporate funding, but felt that the information was biased. She was happy to learn that ECP relies only on grants and individual donations, allowing our curriculum developers to present unbiased, scientific data and research.
Another interested educator was on a mission to teach students about common misconceptions surrounding dairy consumption, specifically the myth that dairy is required for calcium absorption. She expressed great interest in incorporating our resources on non-dairy sources of calcium into her classroom.
Takeaways from ECP Representatives
“As we engaged with teachers from a variety of specialties and determined how we could best fit into their curricula, it became apparent that we had something to offer everyone. It was truly a rewarding experience to meet passionate science educators in the local community, learn about their curriculum needs, and discuss how our resources could be used to inspire and empower their students.”
Amber Snyder
The reception to our videos and additional resources was overwhelmingly positive. In addition, educators were very impressed with the physical look and function of our digital library. Offering comments ranging from “beautiful” to “clean and professional,” visitors to our exhibit table admired our video library’s offerings.
“What a delight it was to spend the day with the OSTA attendees and engage with them about the types of science they teach and the materials they use in the classroom. We met many teachers from various disciplines, from chemistry to biology to environmental science.
I was thrilled to show them how easily they can access relevant presentation videos, lesson plans, and other resources for free through our platform with only a few clicks. Since I had a direct hand in bringing our new library to fruition, it was especially fun for me to watch people interact with the videos and other materials that we make available there.
For many people, this event was their first introduction to ECP, and the response was so enthusiastic we ran out of fliers detailing our website and library URLs. Equally rewarding were the compliments we received from an old friend, a teacher who has been using our presentations for years, going back to before we even offered digital, on-demand content. She was visibly thrilled to see how our offerings continue to expand and become more widely accessible. She said she would incorporate our videos into her curriculum even more in the future. I couldn't ask for a better reception than that!”
